The Power Line Common Mode Choke, also known as a common mode inductor, is an electronic component used to suppress Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). It is primarily utilized in power lines to reduce common mode noise propagating from the device to the power line, and also to minimize common mode noise from the power line entering the device.

Common mode noise refers to voltage or current signals of the same phase that exist between the power line and the ground line. This noise is typically caused by parasitic capacitance between the power line and the ground line, which generates common mode currents when high-frequency signals pass through. The Common Mode Choke operates by generating opposite magnetic fields in its two windings, thereby increasing impedance in the common mode path and effectively suppressing common mode noise, while having minimal impact on differential mode signals (i.e., signals between two conductors).

Common mode chokes are typically constructed with a magnetic core made of ferrite or other high-permeability materials, and two windings wrapped around it. These two windings are often designed to be tightly coupled to ensure maximized interaction in the magnetic field, thereby enhancing the suppression effect on common mode noise.

In practical applications, common mode chokes are widely used in various electronic products, including computers, medical equipment, audio devices, etc., to ensure that the devices comply with electromagnetic compatibility standards and reduce electromagnetic interference to external devices and the power grid.
